City of Mitchell (2002 statistics)
*Mitchell is located on Interstate 90 and Highway 37.
It is a friendly community of around 14,000 people. It is approximately
one hour west of Sioux Falls and five hours southwest of Minneapolis.
You can also travel 4 hours to the west and enjoy the sites and beautiful
scenery of the Black Hills.
*Mitchell has 29 churches with fourteen denominations.
*The public school system K-12 consists of three elementary
buildings, 1,196 total enrollment, and 20:1 pupil/teacher ratio; one middle
school, 685 total enrollment, 17:1 pupil/teacher ratio; one senior high, 950
total enrollment, 17:1 pupil/teacher ratio
*The private schools include Mitchell Christian School and
John Paul II Catholic School. Mitchell
Christian consists of two buildings, elementary K-8, 122 total enrollment, 18:1
pupil/teacher ratio; and high school 9-12, 48 total enrollment.
John Paul II Catholic School, K-6, consists of 253 total enrollment, 16:1
pupil/teacher ratio. Mitchell schools have a reputation for athletic, academic
and music achievements.
*Mitchell also has two post-secondary programs.
Mitchell Technical Institute has 830 enrolled in a variety of programs.
Dakota Wesleyan University is a local private college that offers several
majors.
*Mitchell has a fully staffed and equipped hospital,
fifteen medical clinics, fourteen dentists,
two nursing homes and many assisted living facilities.
*Mitchell has numerous businesses. There are seven banks, three major super markets,
a Cabela's Outfitters Complex, Big
K, Super Wal-Mart, Shop-Ko, The Daily Republic newspaper, local AM & FM radio stations,
three Christian radio stations available and eighteen motels. The local
government consists of a mayor & council, 32 on the police force, 20
full-time/11 volunteer firemen and a public library.
*Mitchell is a very active community with
many recreational activities. There are
22 lake access lots for Lake Mitchell, an indoor movie theater complex and one
outdoor drive in theater, one 9-hole and one 18-hole golf course, a public
swimming pool, fourteen parks , a baseball stadium, fourteen softball diamonds,
a new community recreation center, an indoor ice arena, five soccer fields and
three basketball arenas. South
Dakota is well known for excellent hunting opportunities.
*There are also many local attractions: The World's Only
Corn Palace, the Oscar Howe Art Center, the Prehistoric Indian Village/Archeodome,
the Middle Border Museum of Indian & Pioneer Life and the Enchanted World
Doll Museum.
